Hot German mustard, for accompaniment
4 cloves, whole
Gherkins, for accompaniment
12 ounces beer
6 hard rolls
1 onion, medium, chopped
to taste peppercorns
1. Combine bratwursts, beer, onion, peppercorns, and cloves in a 3-quart saucepan and simmer for 20 minutes; drain.
2. Preheat grill until hot. Grill bratwursts for about 10 minutes or until browned; sprinkle with a bit of water to form a crisp skin.
3. Serve in hard rolls with gherkins and mustard.
