4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced
20 g butter
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 egg, beaten
3 cups hot milk
160 g Gruyere cheese, grated
chopped fresh herbs: basil, parsley, thyme, tarragon or chives
Pinch of nutmeg
Time: 1 hr 30 min
1. Combine the butter and garlic and use it to grease a casserole dish.
2. Place the sliced potatoes into the dish then mix the egg, milk and cheese with fresh herbs and pour over potatoes.
3. Sprinkle with nutmeg and bake at 180 C for about 1 1/2 hours or until tender.
4. Garnish with more fresh herbs and serve with roast or barbecued meats.
